Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is a very specific form of manual therapy where the therapist is trained in the physiology of the nervous system and how it effects the muscular and skeletal systems of the body. An NMT therapist is also trained in kinesiology and biomechanics.

By definition, NMT is the use of static pressure on very specific myofascial points in the body to reduce pain. The soft tissue of the body (muscle, tendon, connective tissue) is manipulated to balance the central nervous system. In a healthy normal moving person, nerves transmit impulses (responsible for every movement, function and thought) to the body very slowly. Things like injury, trauma, postural dysfunction and even stress cause the nerves to transmit faster, inhibiting equilibrium and making the body more vulnerable to dysfunction and pain. NMT stabilises the nerve transmissions to lower levels thus restoring normal function and overall health.
Neuromuscular Therapy may be used to help address possible causes of pain as:
- Ischemia: Lack of blood flow to soft tissues which may be causing sensitivity to touch.
- Trigger Points: Highly irritated points in muscle fibres which may be identified as referring pain to other points in the body.
- Nerve Compression or Entrapment: Pressure on a nerve by soft tissue, bone or cartilage.
- Postural Distortion: Muscular system imbalance resulting from incorrect movement of the body.
- Biomechanical Dysfunction: Imbalance in the musculoskeletal system resulting in incorrect and faulty movement patterns, which may be seen in the golf or tennis swing or even bad lifting habits.

David. Age 52.
Born with an abnormality to my lumbar spine, I have had discomfort in my back ever since I can remember; more noticeable since I started a career in cabinetmaking during my teenage years and noticed a kyphosis on my spine.
By the time I reached my 30’s osteoarthritis had developed in my joints and a scoliosis on my spine. I experienced pain predominantly in the back, shoulder and neck which over time has become more constant and severe.
As an adventurer I have always been very active in outdoor pursuits. About 8 years ago I started to be been held back by my affliction; affecting my ability to work full time.
Eighteen months ago I started regular appointments with Claire, the results have been amazing. From the first visit with her I had a visible improvement to my posture and after several visits; pain in my back, neck and shoulder had notably eased. With her extensive knowledge she has advised me on techniques to improve my stance while walking, sitting and working. The flexibility I have gained has allowed beneficial exercises such as pilates to strengthen my body for better back support.
I’ve had treatments from other specialists such as Osteopaths and Acupuncturists with good results. However with Claire and the exercises she recommended my quality of life has been improved long term.
